1)The 5th Kanto Regional Conference of ASPnet(5 October 2024)
Tamagawa University College of Education organized the 5th Kanto Regional Conference of ASPnet on 5 October 2024 at Tamagawa University, in cooperation with other ASPUnivNet member universities (Seikei University, Soka University, Tokai University), Kanagawa UNESCO Associated Schools Network (KAN), Otsuma Nakano Junior & Senior High School, Tokyo Metropolitan Yamaski High School and the Youth Committee of the Japanese national Commission for UNESCO. The main topic of the Conference was: “ASPnet from the Perspectives of the Whole Person Education (Zenjin Education): the Role of Teachers for Youth Empowerment.” The keynote lecture by Prof. Reiko Mihara of Doshisha University was followed by the panel discussion “What role is expected of school teachers for promoting youth empowerment?” and the five pararell sessions organized by the collaborating organizations. Tamagawa University organized in cooperation with Tokyo Metropolitan Yamaski High School and Otsuma Nakano Junior & Senior High School the joint workshop of university students and high school students on the topic of the Ukrainian krisis, in the joint search for an effective and creative approach for intercultural conflict resolution. The achievement of this 5th Kanto Regional Conference of ASpnet was reported in the parallel session 1 (ASPUnivNet) at the 16th Annual Conference of ASPnet which took place on 30 November 2024.
2)ASPUnivNet joint research project “An empirical study on the factors enhancing the motivation of teachers at ASPnet member schools”
Tamagawa University College of Education promoted the ASPUnivNet joint research project “An empirical study on the factors enhancing the motivation of teachers at ASpnet member schools” in collaboration with Fukuyama City University and Shinshu University. On the basis of the hearing data at 29 ASpnet member schools, we analysed the factors which promote the transformation from extrinsic into intrinsic motivation of teachers and submitted our joint research paper to an academic journal.
3)Supportive activities for ASpnet member schools and applicant schools
Tamagawa University College of Education implemented supportive actions for several ASPnet schools interms of guest lecture, ESD seminar, workshop for teachers and workshop for students on SDGs etc., including Tokyo Metropolitan Yamasaki High School, Otsuma Nakano Junior & Senior High School, Yachiyo City Takatsu Elementary School, Itabashi Ward Hasune Daini Elementary School, Koei VERITAS Junior & Senior High School, Nerima Ward Nakamura Junior High School, Koto Ward Yanagawa Elementary School and Soka University. As a member of the school board “Yamasaki Consortium” we provides Yamasaki High School with some advices about the curriculum development and the development of lesson plans focusing on SDGs and the transformative education of UNESCO. At the ASPnet Supporting Seminar which took place on 13 December 2024 at Soka University, we held a keynote lecture “Contemporary tasks of ASPnet and its prospects towards sustainable future” and organizes a workshop with several ASPnet member schools and candidate schools. As an ASPnet review advisor, we also implemented an evaluating review for 28 ASpnet member schools at the request by ACCU.
4)Initiatives of Tamagawa University Club for UNESCO
Tamagawa University Club for UNESCO puts forward practical youth actions for the “creation of a sustainable and peaceful society.” As a member of the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan (NFUAJ), we also promote actions for the strengthening of the collaboration between ASPnet and UNESCO clubs/associations. On 13-14 July 2024, we convened the 11th Annual Summit of College UNESCO Clubs at Tamagawa University, in cooperation with the UNESCO clubs of Nara University of Education, Soka Unniversity, Aoyama Gakuin University and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. We also implement a joint study tour to UNESCO Haedquarters together with Aoyama Gakuin University club for UNESCO 9-15 February 2025 in order to learn about the frontiers of the UNESCO education programmes including ASPnet and to find partner ASPnet member schools for international exchange and collaboration. On 23 February 2025, we will organize a youth woprkshop for civil UNESCO movement under the organization of Tokyo Federation of UNESCO Associations, in coolaboration with the UNESCO clubs of several universities.
Annual Work Plan
1)Curriculum Development for Teacher Education Programme focusing on SDGs
Tamagawa University College of Education offered several teacher education courses focusing on SDGs and the transformative education of UNESCO, such as “Theory and Methods for teaching the Integrated Studies” and “Education of the World in the Cultural Context”, for the purpose of nurturing the practical competencies of teachers for SDGs learning in the school classrooms. We are planning to construct a more integrative teacher education programme for ESD/SDGs in order to enhance the level of quality education in congruence with the universal values proclaimed by UNESCO for the peaceful and sustainable future of the human society. We will also start an exchange programme with VIA University College of Denmark for the promotion of intercultural learning and the nurturing of international solidarity.
2)Collaboration with Tokyo Metropolitan Yamasaki High school and Otsuma Nakano Junior & Senior High School
We will level up the collaboration with Tokyo Metropolitan Yamasaki High School and Otsuma Nakano Junior & Senior High School by introducing the joint SDGs workshop of university students and high school students which shall deal with urgent problems in the international society today such as the climate change and the escalation of international conflicts. We will report some aspects of this joint SDGs practical learning workshop at the 6th Kanto Regional Conference of ASPnet which shall take pllace in summer 2025.
3)Networking of College UNESCO Clubs and the Development of an International Collaboration Programme
Tamagawa University Club for UNESCO will put forward our collaboration with the UNESCO clubs at other universities including Aoyama Gakuin University, Soka University, Nara University of Education, Tokyo University of Marine Science & Technology and also with the Youth Committee of the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO towards the establishment of the interuniversity network of UNESCO clubs for furthering youth empowerment for the peaceful and sustainable future. We will also strengthen our cooperation with UNESCO Headquarters (Education Sector) in order to promote international exchange and cocreation of “Culture of Peace and Non-violence” together with ASPnet member schools and their learners beyond national boundaries in terms of the nurturing of Global Citizenship.
