2024 Annual Report
International understanding, Peace, Sustainable production and consumption, Health, Global Citizenship Education (GCED)
Activities from April 2024 to March 2025
Our school develops educational activities based on three principles: “Knowledge and Virtue” (to cultivate a heart of gratitude, compassion, and independence), “Knowledge, Gratitude, and Repayment of Gratitude” (to know, feel, and repay the gratitude to the people around us, our ancestors, and nature), and “International Japanese” (to develop Japanese people who can play an active role in the international community).
ESD at our school is truly represented by the idea of “triple benefits.” The peace of humanity proposed by our school’s founder is based on the idea of “SANPOUYOSHI=triple benefits,” and advocates avoiding conflict and resolving things peacefully. It is about learning about the triple benefits of the world with compassion and love, thinking about how to apply it to the present, and thinking about what we can do as global citizens for the future of the world, and then acting on it.
[Major international initiatives in 2024]
1. For the purpose of intercultural dialogue
(October 24, 2024)
On Thursday, October 24, 32 second-year high school students and three teachers from Mingdao Senior High School (a junior and senior high school integrated school) in Taiwan visited our school and interacted with our third-year junior high school students. The students from Mingdao Senior High School introduced their school life in English and learned about the differences between our school and their school life. They deepened their friendship through a walk around the school grounds and a sports exchange. After that, they ate our school lunch together in the cafeteria, and in the afternoon they experienced Japanese culture and introduced Japanese culture in English, focusing on the Japanese culture club’s koto, wadaiko research club, archery club, kendo club, and karate club.
2. For the purpose of intercultural dialogue
(December 18, 2024)
On Wednesday, December 18, the second-year junior high school students held an exchange meeting with Wen-Hua Senior High School in Taiwan. The day was blessed with fine weather, and we welcomed the students from Bunka High School outside the school building. The program began with greetings and introductions from the representatives of each school. It must have been more nerve-wracking than usual to give a presentation in English, which is not one’s native language, in front of a large audience, but all the students gave a dignified and wonderful presentation.
The students from Bunka High School gave speeches in Japanese as well as English, and the venue was filled with thunderous applause. It was a moment when I realized that even if you cannot speak fluently, the attitude of trying to use the local language is something that makes people living in that country very happy. We held a long rope competition in the gymnasium. Since it was the first time for the students from Bunka High School to jump long rope, they had a hard time jumping well. However, the students from Reitaku pushed them from behind to teach them the timing, and encouraged each other out loud in class, and as a result, everyone was able to jump and deepened their bonds.
At the intercultural presentation, the Kyudo Study Group, Kendo Club, Karate Club, and Wadaiko Study Group made presentations in that order. Bunka High School presented a performance by its dance club. Dressed in gorgeous costumes, the students performed a perfectly synchronized dance that combined the graceful movements of ballet with traditional dance, captivating the entire audience.
3. Aiming for sustainable production and consumption
(November 3rd-4th, 2024)
Eight representative students from the SDGs research group “EARTH” at Reitaku Junior and Senior High School co-hosted the “Fukushima and Beyond Environmental Tour for Junior and Senior High School Students” with the Ministry of the Environment’s Environmental Regeneration and Resource Recycling Bureau as part of the “GOALs” collaborative program between three junior and senior high schools in the metropolitan area from November 3rd (Sun) to 4th (Mon, holiday). “GOALs” was launched as a school collaboration program in the metropolitan area in 2021, and in 2022, an inquiry learning program was implemented with the theme of “Thinking about a sustainable future from Fukushima.” In 2023, we will continue the theme, and in order to not forget the disaster and to convey Fukushima’s rich nature, we have collaborated with Kiden Co., Ltd. to commercialize original hand towels. Through school cultural festivals and sustainability events, we aim to expand the possibilities of organic cotton and contribute to Fukushima’s sustainable environment and future.
In 2024, we will co-host the “Fukushima and Beyond Environment Tour by Junior and Senior High School Students for Junior and Senior High School Students” with the Ministry of the Environment’s Environmental Regeneration and Resource Recycling Bureau, with the aim of “informing the same generation about Fukushima’s current situation and contributing together to Fukushima’s sustainable environment and future.” The tour has four key points.
(1) An original tour planned by GOALs members (junior and senior high school students from the Tokyo metropolitan area) who actually visited the Hamadori region in April.
(2) 24 GOALs members will guide 22 junior and senior high school students from other schools as learning partners.
(3) Learn about Fukushima’s “past, present, and future” through the five senses through cotton harvesting experiences and dialogue with people active in Fukushima.
(4) Tour the area while engaging in dialogue with small groups, feeling and thinking with your heart as well as your head.
A total of 46 students from eight schools in the Tokyo metropolitan area participated in this “Fukushima and the Environment Beyond Tour by Junior and Senior High School Students for Junior and Senior High School Students”.
GOALs has been working under the motto “Reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake should not be limited to theory alone”, and was able to hold a tour to experience Fukushima’s present with the five senses by involving junior and senior high school students of the same generation in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
We will continue to expand our activities nationwide and work together to create the future of Fukushima.
4. Aiming for sustainable production and consumption
(November 17, 2024)
The SDGs research group “EARTH” held an SDGs event in collaboration with various companies at LaLaport Kashiwanoha on Sunday, November 17th. Our joint SDGs efforts began when the SDGs Study Group sold fair trade coffee at the KASHIWANO Christmas Market held at LaLaport Kashiwanoha in December 2022.
This time, in addition to selling fair trade products, we also had students introduce the SDGs efforts of companies in order to raise awareness of the SDGs efforts at stores in LaLaport Kashiwanoha. As part of the initiative, we also held a talk session between the students of the SDGs Study Group and five companies: Uniqlo, Gap/GapKids, Right-on, Akachan Honpo, and H.I.S. We had a great turnout. Thank you very much to everyone who came. Once again, we were able to convey our “coffee and tea” and our “feelings” to many people.
