The year for Korea International School’s UNESCO inkai began with a volunteering trip to Thailand by four students. The students went to the region of Chenrai, where they participated in volunteering by playing with the local children, helping at the school, and assisting with dam construction.

In the summer, some students participated in volunteer activities in Kensennuma along with students from other schools, where they learned about the 2011 Earthquake that devastated Miyagi Prefecture.

As well, during the summer one student participated in various volunteer activities while on summer break. This included assisting in reconstruction efforts in Suzu City in Ishikawa ken, as well as soil and sand removal from buildings damaged by heavy rain Yamagata Prefecture.

In the fall, as part of the students’ trip to the Philippines, the students participated in volunteer activities in the slum areas of Cebu city alongside a local charity group. Students participated in a walk through the actual slum to get a look at what life is like in those areas, afterwards they played with local children at the charities center, and listened to a performance by the local band. Around the same time, some other students participated in the group volunteer activities in Noto.

Finally, in December some students took part in preparing meals and playing with young children in Toyonaka-shi. As well, 2 students took part in the SDGs passport happyokai at Kasugaoka high high school in Ibaraki city.

Annual Work Plan

In the new year, until March, students will generally be busy with completing exams and such, but will engage with activities as they can on an individual level.
