Annual Work Plan

Maiko Park & Maiko High School Collaboration Project “Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge Main Tower Tour” Details

Date: October 23, 2024

The “Maiko Park & Maiko High School Collaboration Project” is being implemented with the aim of enlivening the local community and helping the local community help the Maiko High School students to have a meaningful high school experience.

This time, 28 students from Maiko High School were greatly helped by the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Co.

While walking on the grating that allows visitors to see the sea 50 meters below for about 1 km from the Maiko Promenade to the main tower, the students were briefed on the cutting-edge technology of the bridge, including innovations to prevent rust and a mechanism to protect water pipes, and after taking an elevator to the main tower, they experienced the world-class scale of the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge.

Although the students see the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge every day, this was the first time they had studied it in such detail.

Some participants eagerly studied the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge beforehand in the library, and some students eagerly asked questions to the staff who guided them around the bridge. We hope that this experience will help the participating students in their future. We also hope that they will deepen their love for their hometown.

Comments from participating students…The experience of going to the top of the main tower of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a special memory. I was thrilled to be able to enter a place that is normally inaccessible, and the elevator took me all the way up to the 98th floor. Along the way, there was an explanation where we could learn about the structure of the bridge and how sturdy the cables and steel frame were designed to be. When we reached the top, a magnificent view awaited us. I was impressed by the beauty of the panoramic view of the ocean, Kobe, and the city of Awaji. It was an experience that allowed me to enjoy the mechanism of the bridge as well as the wonderful scenery.

It always looks stunning and beautiful at night with its lights. Hearing about its construction and the infrastructure it provides to Awaji island was very interesting. The view from the top was breathtaking you can see a big part of the Kansai region. It makes me want to travel all of it! I’m thankful for Maiko HS for inviting me!

(Student)

I was fascinated by the overwhelming scale and beautiful scenery of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. I was very impressed by the wonderful technology of the bridge, as I was able to see up close the inside and structure of the bridge, which I am not usually able to see. It was great to hear more about the bridge. The sky was a little cloudy, but the view from high above was breathtaking, and we could see the whole cityscape of Kobe and Awaji Island. I never thought I would be able to see the scenery from a bridge that I see all the time. I am glad I was able to have this rare and precious experience.

At our school, all first-year students folded cranes for peace, and second- and third-year students volunteered to assemble them into 1,000 paper cranes, for which art club members produced illustrations.
They were then displayed in the Malala Room at the Nobel Peace Center!
